The history of the Noctyll, sometimes called Dark Elves, is a complicated and often tragic story. When the Eternyll betrayed their own kind and brought war and death to the world, Evernyll itself awakened and the Fonts of Power began to appear across the world. Many elves began seeking out these Fonts, hoping to discover more about their world and what had been done to it. While exploring deep within a network of caves, which twisted miles and miles underground, one sect of elves discovered a Font of Darkness, and its strange Avatar. So disturbed by the appearance of the Avatar, and fearing it might curse them, the elves opted to destroy it. Though some opposed, the Font was destroyed.
Unfortunately, the elves were subject to the dying wrath of the Avatar, which collapsed the caves around them and trapped many of the elves within. The survivors who escaped the collapse, many of them having opposed the destruction in the first place, felt that they could not leave the caves without trying to amend what they’d done. They remained underground, seeking a new Darkness Font, and eventually finding one that they would tend to and appease with solemn prayers and promises of protection. Over time the elves were mutated by the Darkness Font, giving them grey skin, and sometimes grey or black sclera. Eventually, the Avatar reformed within this new Font - though, now it seemed to possess a new fervor for vengeance, and an awareness of the evil of living beings. The Noctyll found themselves at the mercy of this Avatar of Darkness, now living both in veneration of its power, and fear of its retribution. They became skilled in using Darkness magic, remaining underground for centuries.
Noctyll who come above ground find themselves sometimes ostracized for their appearance, or for their strange cultlike culture around their Avatar. But many see the tragic story of their deity as something they connect to, being that it was originally misunderstood and kind, and became more powerful as it grew to understand pain and betrayal. The Noctyll, once created in an act of atonement, are now considered a ruthless race of elves who zealously serve their Avatar. They would also become the progenitor of the Vampire curse, with which they have a complicated relationship.
