There is a reason that so much of the discussion about Evernyll's magic, world, religions, and cultures revolve around the Fonts of Power.
For eons, Evernyll existed in an Era of Stasis, where death was entirely unknown. The balance of nature was perfect, animals did not know hunger, and the only sapient life - a race of Elves known as the Eternyll - were the immortal caretakers of their world. This was an unchanging, placid time. The only magic in existence was Arcane magic, which was used by the Eternyll for utilitarian purposes as they grew their capital city and developed their tranquil culture.
The history of this time is difficult to study, but what is known is that the peace of the Eternyll was shattered by a brutal civil war. Though many fled the war, the opposing factions were relentless. The war did not end until the capital city was reduced to ruin, and the victors stood amidst the first graveyard of their people.
It is believed that the introduction of Death to the planet caused Evernyll's power to fracture into many sources of power. As Death brought a new unbalance, the world Awakened, and attempted to right itself again by introducing new magics, new powers. The answer to Death was an explosion of Life, and the elevation of Souls. But even this didn't return the world to stasis.
Fonts were appearing across the world, as if trying to provide a new answer, another piece that may finally balance the board, by giving power to the natural forces of the planet and its people. Mighty elemental forces, like Water, Fire, Earth, and Air produced Fonts of Power. Celestial bodies in their awesome scale created Cosmic Fonts, which altered gravity. The introduction of pain and death meant that Blood and Disease were new forces to reckon with. For every Font, a new type of magic could be Awakened in the people of Evernyll, and new mutations of that magic affected the land and the living creatures.
Sometimes a stationary place of power, or sometimes free to appear and disappear such as with a storm of Lightning or a flickering Fire, Fonts are often unique and difficult to study. They can be as subtle as a change in the landscape, or as obvious as a glowing light. Fonts of Power are the only place where someone can Awaken magical ability beyond Arcane magic, and Awakening is never guaranteed, as specified on the Magic page. They are the link that brings Evernyll's magic to the people, though they can also be perilous and impossible to predict.
Given the immense power of the Fonts, many cultures of all Races base their religion or beliefs around them. This can lead to a phenomenon known as Avatars. If a Font is part of Evernyll itself, an Avatar is a piece of consciousness that is manifested by the will of the people. It can happen purposely, or by accident. But in the end, they are the only deities that Evernyll has known, and are equally as unique and unpredictable as the Fonts themselves.
Fonts can be sought out and discovered. They can come to being, and can even be destroyed. Some have Avatars that are revered by worshipers, others cause fearsome mutations. Evernyll is in a time of constant change and evolution, with new cultures, races, and magic being discovered to this day, because of the Fonts of Power that arose from Evernyll's Awakening.
